Smoking

You have probably heard about smoking.  You may know someone who smokes.  Here are some facts about Smoking.
  • About 8.6 million people in the US has at least 1 serious illness caused from smoking
  • Smoking is the cause of 1 in 5 deaths in the US
  • Every day, about 3,450 teens in the US try a cigarette.  About 25% will become addicted 
  • More than 80% of adult smokers started before they were 18
  • Tar stains smokers' fingers and teeth
  • About 70 of a cigarettes' chemicals can cause cancer
  • Some toxins found in cigarettes:
    • Rat poison
    • Toilet cleaners 
  • There are 1.1 billion smokers today
  • It is estimated that it will increase to 1.6 billion at 2025
  • About 10 million cigarettes are bought each minute
  • 1 in 5 teens 13-15 smoke cigarettes
  • Someone dies every 8 seconds related to tobacco 
  • 10% of all infant deaths are from expecting mothers smoking
  • Every hour, some one dies from smoking in the US
  • More deaths are from smoking than HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle accidents, suicides and murders combined
  • It takes 8 seconds for nicotine to reach the brain 
But smoking doesn't affect only affect the smoker.  It also affects the people around them, which is called second hand smoke.  Here are some facts.
  •  Every year in the US, about 2,000 infants die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by tobacco related items
  • About 3,400 Nonsmoker Americans die each year
  • Children with parents who smoke can have asthma, increased chances of colds and ear infections, and SIDS
